Talk about noisy neighbours 🐘

Our partner Samya Basu in West Bengal is implementing measures to stop elephants coming into villages and raiding food stores. 🏘️

Samya is making villages more elephant-friendly by installing modern alarm systems to give villagers early warning of them being about and underground granaries to stop them accessing stored food. 🚨🫘

Samya was also recently invited to carry out training on elephant identification, tracking, the role of villagers and low-cost mitigation measures on behalf of the State Forest Training Institute (Hijli), the Directorate of Forests and the Government of West Bengal.

These humane measures are replacing traditional and harmful deterrents like electricity, crackers and fire. The goal is to enable humans and elephants to live alongside each other more harmoniously and safely in the future. 🫶

Saving pangolins from poaching 🥺

Sander from the Pangolin project we're funding out in Vietnam has been in touch with some lovely photos and videos of pangolins from their centre (some of these pangolins are in captivity as they're considered evidence in prosecutions against animal traffickers and some are part of a captive breeding scheme). 🌴

Part of the project is to improve the enclosures/enrichment to hopefully keep the animals as stimulated and 'wild' as possible before they are released back into the wild. 🌴

Sander has been trying out rotating the pangolins into different enclosure to stimulate them - they look like they enjoyed it!

Searching for bats 🦇🚆

Our intern, Rachel Reizin, has been surveying disused tunnels around the South-West of England to monitor bat activity:

"It's been an absolutely wonderful experience so far. I've been able to use a wide array of equipment to monitor the bats and their behaviour in detail. Seeing the bats thrive, and watching their interactions has definitely made all the late nights worthwhile. As well as this, having the opportunity to see the old railway tunnels hidden away in the landscape, and the work that was put into their construction has been fascinating in its own way. Now that the fieldwork season is over, I'm excited to analyse all of the data we've collected to understand these wonderful creatures even better!"
