I have just signed up, so thought I would post about my Hedgehogs as an introduction. I have had a trail camera in the garden for the last five years. I built a feeding station and have a couple of hedgehog boxes set up. I have been lucky enough to have had regular Hoggy visitors every year and enjoy watching them. I think there are two regulars, but have had four occasionally. Mostly they just snuffle about in the grass or go to the feeding station, but I have seen them self anointing, rolling other Hogs etc which is quite funny to watch. Last year, one Hog began taking grass/leaves into one of the boxes so I hoped there might be Hoglets on the way, but none appeared. Last July a couple of Hogs spent one evening circling each other and grunting, before mating on camera, so I wonder if Hoglets may appear. Bit worried though as it is getting a bit late in the year. One thing that puzzles me a bit, is where the Hogs come from. I have a wildlife friendly garden but live on an estate. On three sides the neighbours have all put fences up with no gaps below I can see. The only access to the garden would be via a passage from the front street between my garage and house. I have read that Hogs will travel a mile or so on their foraging routes, but can`t help wondering whether mine live in the garden, maybe below sheds or bushes ?. The main regular, Mr Patches, usually appears on camera around 9.00pm and sets the camera off pretty much constantly until 4.00am every night. The other seems to show up around 10.00pm.

Welcome to the Forum! It’s lovely to hear about the hedgehogs there. You are lucky to see self annointing – it’s something that not everyone ever sees! Don’t give up re. hoglets – she may have had them elsewhere and they still might appear. Often slightly more grown hoglets will turn up on their own in the Autumn.
Glad to hear you have a wild life friendly garden but, unless it’s enormous it won’t be a big enough range for a hog and they are likely to visit other gardens as well. Males can travel up to 2 miles a night, so even if the gardens near to you are blocked off there may be some they can access a bit further away. They can also move surprisingly quickly when they want to! They don’t tend to live in one place permanently and will, apparently, sometimes even move nests during hibernation time.
There may well be a nest under your shed – under sheds are a favourite place being nice and dry and often sheltered.
I hope all continues to go well with the hedgehogs there. Good luck and happy hog watching!
