MESSAGE OF HELP! FROM BHPS ON TWITTER

Goodnature traps are now claiming that their traps actually benefit hedgehogs by stopping food competition and predation of their young!!
It looks like the hogs can either have their whole extended family killed by one of these traps, or get stuck in one of the tunnels and starve to death in unpleasant circumstances.
I am disappointed with DEFRA and don’t understand their acceptance of this hedgehog killing machine even Goodnatures paperwork shows teeth marks of hedgehogs and say it is successful at catching hedgehogs. Why is everyone in denial? If DEFRA are not prepared to withdraw approval at least change the design and make the entrance longer to the trip site so hedgehogs can’t get their heads in. How are DEFRA going to manage this as hedgehogs are a protected species. I am so angry but what more can we do. Nobody is going to post photos of dead hedgehogs trapped with these machines.
Goodnature claim the ‘excluder tunnel’ they sell can help protect hedgehogs. So, not only are they selling an ‘excluder tunnel’ which is unsuitable and itself can trap hedgehogs, but it is sold as an extra anyway. Presumably that means that the trap is still sold on its own in the same form as it is used in New Zealand to kill hedgehogs. If they are really serious about trying to protect hedgehogs, why are they ignoring the advice of BHPS who I am very sure know more about hedgehogs than Goodnature Traps UK.
It seems to me that DEFRA have only just scraped the surface in their understanding of the issues involved. Hedgehogs deserve better than this.
Hi Hoglet
There is a link to a very sad film on the BHPS site – Trap Petition section – of a poor unfortunate hedgehog killed by an A24 Trap – complete with warnings about how distressing it is. I don’t know how anyone could watch that and not sign the Petition. To think that that could happen to any of the hedgehogs which I have known for many years, most of them since hoglethood doesn’t bear thinking about.
Please everyone sign the Petition and share the message.
Please everyone, keep signing and passing on the message.
