Hello. I’m looking for some reassurance that I haven’t spooked my hedgehog enough that it’ll look for another home! I have seen (on the trail cam) my garden hedgehog recently coming for dinner. However, I was convinced it wasn’t occupying last year’s hedgehog house and decided to clean it out and remove all last year’s leaves/bedding. I opened the top and started lifting out handfuls of bedding (gently thank goodness) only to come across a hedgehog’s back, so I quickly replaced the bedding removed and shut the lid tight. I was wearing garden gloves so guessing I didn’t leave too much human smell behind. Would I have disturbed the poor hedgehog enough to prompt it to move house? I so hope not!!!

    Hi Susan R

Whilst I would always advise against disturbing a hog in a nesting/sleeping box, from what you say you were being careful and it seems unlikely that the hog would be too upset. The worst times would be during hibernation or if there were new borns there. Hopefully the hog will stay, but even if it doesn’t there would be no way of knowing why it moved. It could be for some completely other reason.
