Hi Ann,
From what I have seen, building the nest seems to be a very last minute thing, with lots of ripping up grass and dashing around often during daylight. If it is a female with babies, you may just be able to here them ‘peeping’ or ‘chirping’. Hedgehog Bottom rescue have some very useful recordings online.
