Hi Tom55

Welcome to the Forum! It’s lovely to hear about the hedgehogs there. You are lucky to see self annointing – it’s something that not everyone ever sees! Don’t give up re. hoglets – she may have had them elsewhere and they still might appear. Often slightly more grown hoglets will turn up on their own in the Autumn.

Glad to hear you have a wild life friendly garden but, unless it’s enormous it won’t be a big enough range for a hog and they are likely to visit other gardens as well. Males can travel up to 2 miles a night, so even if the gardens near to you are blocked off there may be some they can access a bit further away. They can also move surprisingly quickly when they want to! They don’t tend to live in one place permanently and will, apparently, sometimes even move nests during hibernation time.

There may well be a nest under your shed – under sheds are a favourite place being nice and dry and often sheltered.

I hope all continues to go well with the hedgehogs there. Good luck and happy hog watching!
