We are new to the world of hedgehogs but about a year ago we bought a hedgehog house and found a resident within a few days (since bought a second as we find quite a few visitors in our garden at night!). Our resident hedgehog has been roaming the garden for the last week at around 5am (very light and bright!) so we put food out a few nights ago and it’s not been eaten and the I can see the entrance to the house hasn’t been reblocked with leaves/debris during the day like before. Is this normal for them to vacate for a while?

A couple of weeks ago we also tried to clean the house as per the guidance but found a hedgehog in there (shock and horror ensued)! Should we attempt to clean it again before autumn? I saw a similar forum on parasites which freaked me out slightly as we haven’t cleaned it out at all in the last year or so!

    Hi Pricklesstreet

Yes, it is quite normal for hogs to change nests. But in the Summer they don’t normally block entrances unless they are females with young and they might also have vacated. Or if it was very hot and the youngsters had got quite big, mother hog might have nipped out without blocking the hole again. So you need to be careful in case anyone is still in there. But you might be lucky and some hoglets might turn up sometime!

Re. cleaning out hog houses please see: https://www.hedgehogstreet.org/cleaning-out-boxes/ If you are worried about infestations in a particular hog house, you could clean it out in between as long as you are 100% sure no-one is in residence at all (i.e. not just out for the night).

Good luck and happy hog watching!
