Rabbits and Hedgehogs
-
Sadly, the hedgehogs disappeared from my garden some weeks ago now. Still putting supplementary food/water out every night; I’m doing the PTES ‘Living With Mammals’ survey but every week it’s been a negative to signs or sightings. (I just hope as Stef suggested it’s not badgers in the area)
However, today I saw a wild rabbit in the garden! This would explain the digging up of bulbs/eating the plants (was blaming unseen cats/slugs) I rather think the loss of hedgehogs and the start of the garden destruction might have coincided.
Does anyone know if hogs/rabbits can share a garden in harmony? The thick hog friendly planting is being munched by rabbit/rabbits; the hedgehog food remains untouched.
Food/water put out for birds too so obviously want to keep the garden friendly to all wildlife but I do miss the antics of the messy hedgehog visitors.
I’m sorry to hear that your hedgehogs have disappeared. It’s great that you’re still putting out food and water for them and participating in the PTES’ Living With Mammals’ survey. I hope they return soon, and it’s not due to badgers in the area. Interestingly, the wild rabbit’s presence coincides with the garden damage.
Hi Celeste
Sorry to hear about the absence of hogs there. Are there any back yet? Fingers crossed there are!
I wouldn’t have thought the rabbits would bother the hogs, although it’s a bit sad all the hedgehog friendly plants are being munched! But, as you know, there are all sorts of reasons why hogs might go missing – some of them thankfully temporary.
Hope there is better news now. Good luck.
Joy! Hedgehogs been back last three/four days. Food eaten, poo deposits left (luverly!)
Hot weather; the feeding station is just outside my open bungalow bedroom window, so have heard lots of visits through the night. Peeked out in the early hours this morning – a good size, healthy looking hog ambling round the garden, stopped to drink deeply at the water.
Some planting still shredded, lots of digging; haven’t seen any more rabbits but who knows?
Don’t know where they have been but very happy to have them back cruising through the garden 🙂
PS – Thank you Nic for your support
Hi Celeste
Great news the hogs came back! It’s well worth the poo, etc. just to have them around!
