Hedgehog died
-
I rescued a hedgehog that was on a neighbour’s drive on Sunday mid afternoon which was a warm day. After taking him home and giving him some food and water, he seemed very active and ok. I rang a few rescue centres but they were all full and only got answer machines. On the Monday, he still seemed fine. The vets said there was nothing they could do and to keep doing what we were doing until we could find a home that had space. On the Monday night he’d been outside all night and it was drizzling. It seems he slept on the grass and not in the shelter we’d made him. We brought him inside and gave him a fresh blanket but from then he never really woke up and didn’t eat. He died on Wednesday night. I thought he’d be ok as it’s July and that he would used the shelter but it seems like he didn’t and stayed in the open. I thought leaving him outside with food and a shelter was best for him as he seemed small but independent and had a snail the night before.
I feel terrible and responsible for him dying.
You rescued him.
This strongly suggests that he was already ill.
You shouldn’t blame yourself.
You did everything you could.
