Hi DLStuart
It’s good to hear you have some hogs there. Not sure what you mean by false hibernation, but the hogs normally aren’t too troubled by the cold, although they may roll up somewhere for a nap during the course of the night. It’s best really to leave them where they are. They will find somewhere more sheltered if they want to. But hopefully the others will be o.k.
Hogs which have chosen not to hibernate will continue to visit feeding stations all through the winter even when it is very cold – the ones who have done that here have only been deterred from visiting, briefly, when it has snowed too deeply for them.
Ideally, it’s best to keep feeding areas away from nesting areas – especially if you are hoping that a hog might use a hog house for a birthing nest. The food could attract predators, and a female might not like having lots of rowdy visitors too near to her youngsters! That may, of course depend a bit on how much space you have.
Good luck with the hogs. I hope they all do well. Happy hog watching!
