    Hi,
I have a hog that has always come for his evening food while it’s still light. However, today I found them sleeping in the daylight. Initially I thought he was injured, but he appeared fine. I have hog houses in the garden with lots of straw and it was in a spot that catches the sun. He was lying outside the hog house, so it’s possible it was too warm in the box?
Just wondered If anyone had encountered this with other hogs? He was eating fine later so I don’t believe he was in distress.
    Thanks Ann

    Hi Ann

Hedgehogs do sleep outside, but normally in a fairly sheltered place, i.e. right in a flower border, bottom of hedges, etc. Those are the sort of places they would have to sleep if they didn’t have the option of a hog house.

The problem is more if they are out in the open and/or look as if they are sunbathing, behaving oddly, etc. Although it seems odd that he would find it too hot in a hog house at this time of year. I wasn’t sure from what you said whether he had been accustomed to sleeping in the box. Also not easy without knowing the terrain, etc.

But if you are worried about him you could contact your nearest carer – you can explain things to them in more detail. You can get contact details from BHPS on 01584 890801

    Thanks Nic
It was fairly sheltered, under a tree near a hedge. I can’t be certain if it the same hog but he was directly outside the entrance of one of the hog houses (I do have a hog in 3 of the boxes in the garden). It’s a bit of a hot spot when the sun is out but did think it was odd. I’ve not seen him today as the weathers been mixed but will keep an eye out for any problems. I have 4 hogs coming to the feeding station and they all seem healthy so hopefully he was just having a nap.
    Ann
