I have had recently at least 5 hogs in the garden, happily feeding at night, 2 sharing one hog house, one in each of the other two hog houses and one in its own leaf and twig dwelling – all good,
yesterday about 8pm spotted one “random”hog eating and snuffling. This morning all of the hogs gone, the straw has been pulled from the hog houses and left around the entrance. There is no signs of any struggles (we thought maybe fox) and thank goodness no bodies or blood. the hog houses have off set entrance and sleeping quarters gaps so think a fox or cat would struggle to get a paw in and then manouvre left and right to get to the sleeping areas. Could it just be the constant beating of the rain that has stressed them and they have cleared out or any ideas please.Hi Alfie 2017
There are various possibilities, but you might never know for sure. The hogs may have disappeared to find new nests. They do change nests from time to time anyway, but some may be heading off to hibernate now.
Sometimes hogs take bedding out of one house to use to make a nest elsewhere. They may have started and decided against it. Maybe they didn’t like that bedding in the houses any more, for some reason, but hadn’t got round to refilling them. I think they prefer leaves for hibernation, for instance. They can layer them and make a really waterproof well insulated nest, which wouldn’t be so easy with straw. They sometimes chuck bedding out as well if it isn’t to their liking. But these are all guesses. I doubt if the rain would have bothered them. They may already have other nests elsewhere.
