Adopted Albino
-
Good day! I live in the Philippines, and I recently adopted an albino hedgehog. Since we live in a rather industrialized city and the fact that he (Sunny) is an albino, I’m afraid he’ll have to live with us. This is my first time caring for a hedgehog, and I am wondering if he has mites. He stopped quilling (and he seemed pretty healthy all throughout the process), but his quills seem less dense. There aren’t any evident bald spots so I don’t know if his appearance is only due to the fact that he is an albino. There are no trained specialists on our island so your help and response will be much appreciated.
Hi
Any vet should be able to check for mites. some are visible to the naked eye but you may have to have a skin scrape.
On this forum we essentially deal with wild european hedgehogs. You say yours is albino but is it one of the pygmy albino hogs that people buy as pets. They are not the same hogs
Treatment for mites in our hogs is usually ivomectin or selamectin but you would need to confirm this with a vet and get treatment from them.
Normal flea treatment for dogs and cats can be fatal to hogs so don’t use that.
