Hi all
So after making the garden hedgehog friendly last year and registering as a Champion, I finally found a wild hog in the garden, visiting most evenings over the past couple of months. S/he has been appearing earlier in the evening this past week (that we’ve noticed anyway). 7pm the other evening and s/he is out there now feeding. I have managed to get close enough to see the hog looks in good health, feeds and drinks, mobilises quickly and looked clean. So I’m kind of assuming it’s a nursing mother as they can come out earlier in the evening I believe? Just looking for other opinions 🙂

Good to hear you have a hog there. It’s possible it’s a nursing mother, but not a certainty. At this time of year, when the nights are so short, some hogs do come out a bit earlier. But you’re right nursing mothers do sometimes come out during the day and have a break from the young ones.
The following is from BHPS FAQs which will give you an idea of some of the potential problems to look out for.
“Are Hedgehogs meant to be out in the daylight?
Not usually no. Hedgehogs are nocturnal, which means they shouldn’t really be seen out in daylight hours. Some of the exceptions to this are pregnant females gathering nesting materials just before she gives birth, or a new ‘Mum’ taking a break from the nest to get food and water while her young sleep. Sometimes, when the nights are short, a hungry hedgehog may forage around dusk and dawn. However, these hedgehogs would move quickly with purpose. If a hedgehog is lethargic, lay out, has flies around it, is wobbly, or gives you any other cause for concern, please call us for advice ASAP on 01584 890 801.”
You can only put images on the forum if they are already somewhere else on the internet, when you can just put the link on. Otherwise the quickest way to get an image on is to put it on as your profile picture. You can easily change it later, if you want to.
Otherwise you can put photos on the gallery https://www.hedgehogstreet.org/my-hedgehog-street/upload-images/
or video to the Hedgehog Street YouTube channel

S/he’s back out there now, nibbling! Will keep an eye out.
Thanks again

I was hoping a very regular female who hibernated here might have had some hoglets but nothing……good luck with the little ones.10th July 2019 at 4:33 pm #16169Brilliant news, EmmaP!
