More hedgehogs around

Just wondering if the long hot spell has meant we are seeing more hedgehogs, We hadn’t seen any for 20 years in our garden but now have 2 possibly 3 that visit every night for some Spike Dinner and water. Thinking maybe they have been around but just not seen them as weather not been so conducive to sitting out late in the garden before.
Another resident has seen them as well and my daughter saw a mum and 2 babies living under their chalet in Butlins at Bognor Regis!
Another friend saw 8 maybe 10 in Ightham near Sevenoaks.

So pleased to hear that you have been seeing hogs again. You might be right that it’s because you have been sitting out later. But it may also be that they have been venturing further afield to find food in the difficult weather conditions. There are always certain times of the year when a lot of people find hogs seem to ‘disappear’ and it may be, partly, that they just try out other places instead. So, sadly, I’m not sure that there are more hogs around, generally, and research seems to indicate that there aren’t. But it’s lovely to have them around when they choose to be.
If we all do our best to improve the habitat in our gardens and encourage others to do the same, things might start looking up for them. The other really important thing is to link gardens together with holes in fences or walls so that they can gain access to more gardens. This could hopefully mean that they wouldn’t have to cross roads so much to find suitable habitat.
